Through the Kop van Noord-Holland

Walk along dunes, polders and forts in the Kop van Noord-Holland

This route lets you discover the diverse nature and history of the Kop van Noord-Holland region. Much of the route follows the North Sea, through the Helderse Dunes. This area, with its low dune tops, valleys, and coniferous forests, is home to unique plant species such as sea centaury and heather sedge. From the dune tops and the beach, you'll enjoy panoramic views of the sea – perfect for unwinding and clearing your head.

Spot wild animals in the Mariëndal nature reserve
After the dune area, you'll walk through the Mariëndal nature reserve, where former bulb fields have been transformed into low dunes, grasslands, and ponds. With a bit of luck, you might spot a fox here in the early or late hours. Geese, snipe, and oystercatchers are easier to spot and create a vibrant natural landscape.

Along historic forts and the harbour of Den Helder
The route also takes you past the lower polders with a view of Den Helder. Here you'll walk past historic forts that are part of the Den Helder Defence Line, such as Fort Dirksz. Admiraal and Fort Kijkduin. Finally, you'll arrive at the harbor, where you can catch a glimpse of impressive naval ships and other unique vessels.

This 23-kilometer hiking trail starts and ends at the De Helderse Vallei Visitor Center, an ideal starting point for a day full of nature and history.
