The Helderse Noordduinen are not a standard dune area. This landscape of grey dunes is rich in mosses and lichens on calcium-poor sand. It is precisely here that the rare wheatear still breeds. Den Helder is the only place on the Dutch mainland where this species still occurs, which makes this area extra special.<\/p>\n
In these dunes, everything is interconnected. Rabbits dig burrows; birds use them as nesting sites. The wind keeps the landscape open, and birds of prey scan the area from the air. Here, you see no isolated scenery, but a living system that simply reveals itself to those who look quietly.<\/p>\n
