Over the past 200 years, fishermen, shipwrights, lifeguards, and the navy have transformed a small village into a city with a strong connection to the water. Before World War II, Den Helder flourished. After the heavy bombing, the city had to be rebuilt. This resulted in new neighborhoods and a transformed naval shipyard, but the nautical atmosphere remained.<\/p><p><strong>Historical Route: Experience the past and innovation<\/strong><br \/>From station Den Helder, follow the blue arrows of the Historical Route (Marsdiep Route). Along the way, you&#039;ll listen to short documentaries about life in the Visbuurt district, work at the Rijkswerf (National Shipyard), and unique stories from the past. Hear about a young woman who traveled to Den Helder on the &quot;fairy train&quot; to attend a gala at the Royal Netherlands Naval Institute. Step back in time while witnessing the city&#039;s renewal firsthand.<\/p><p>The route takes you past the impressive former Rijkswerf Willemsoord shipyard and offers beautiful views from the dike. Along the way, you can relax at one of the pleasant terraces.<\/p><p><strong>An accessible 4 km walk<\/strong><br \/>The route is easy to follow and starts at station Den Helder. You&#039;ll walk along Beatrixstraat to Willemsoord, passing through the old Rijkswerf (National Shipyard), and then continue to the dike. You&#039;ll then pass the former &#039;t Huys Tijdverdrijf (Timesaving House) and return to the station via Stadspark. The route is over 4 km long, ideal for a relaxing city stroll.<\/p><p><strong>Would you like to view the route map?<\/strong> This map is available at the Experience Store at Spoorstraat 2 and at most businesses in Den Helder.
