This route through the Kop van Noord-Holland combines dunes, forests, and a park-like neighborhood on the west side of Den Helder. Along the way, you&#039;ll pass Fort Kijkduin, a historic fortification that takes you back to the time of Napoleon.<\/p><p>Fancy cooling your feet after your walk? The beach is within walking distance. When the weather is nice, it&#039;s tempting to linger a while and enjoy the sea and beach life.<\/p><p><strong>Discover Mari\u00ebndal and the Grasduinerpolder<\/strong><br \/>After a few kilometers, you&#039;ll enter the Mari\u00ebndal nature reserve. Here, former bulb fields have been transformed into dunes, grasslands, and ponds. With a bit of luck, you might spot a fox searching for prey in the early or late hours. Bird lovers can enjoy watching geese, snipe, and oystercatchers.<\/p><p>Further on, you&#039;ll reach the Grasduinerpolder. This unique area is influenced by brackish North Sea water, allowing salt-loving plants like milkweed and strawberry clover to thrive. Wading birds forage in the bird ponds, while curlews, sandpipers, and brent geese find peace here. On the south side of the area looms the iconic Lange Jaap lighthouse, at 64 meters the tallest cast-iron lighthouse in Europe.<\/p><p><strong>Visit Fort Kijkduin and the North Sea Aquarium<\/strong><br \/>This walk isn&#039;t complete without a visit to Fort Kijkduin. This national monument, commissioned by Napoleon in 1811, boasts a rich history. The underground tunnel system houses a North Sea aquarium where you can experience the underwater world up close.
