City by the sea
Discover Den Helder by visiting 10 different viewing points
In 200 years’ time Fishermen, rescuers, carpenters and the navy have turned the village of Helder into a city. Until the Second World War, Den Helder experienced golden years. After the war, the heavily bombed city had to be rebuilt. New districts were added and the naval dockyard changed. But Den Helder is still a city with a strong connection to the water.
From Den Helder station, follow the blue arrows of the Marsdiep-route and listen to the surprising mini-documentaries about life in the Visbuurt and working at the old dockyard, for example. Or the young lady who comes to Den Helder in a full 'fairy train' to go to the annual “assaut gala” of the Royal Naval Institute with her squire. Imagine yourself back in the past. In the meantime, you can see the renewal in the city, experience the beautiful old dockyard and get a breath of fresh air on the dike. Have a nice coffee or tea on the various terraces along the way.
The route is a nice stroll. From the station on the Beatrix street in the direction of Willemsoord, the old dockyard. From there you walk towards the dike. The walk leads to the location of the former navy canteen and via the City Park back to the station. The route is a bit over 4 km in length.
See this map for the locations of all story points along the route. The routes are also available at the Experience Store at Spoorstraat 2 in Den Helder and have been added separately to all city maps and cycling-walking-sailing maps available at most stores and restaurants in Den Helder and the surrounding area.
