Welcome to Willemsoord.
The former Rijkswerf Willemsoord measures 40 ha. Half of
the site has been owned by the municipality of Den Helder since 2000.
The other half, including the Navy Museum and
be the KIM (part of the Netherlands Defense Academy)
is established by the Royal Netherlands Navy.
The French emperor Napoleon Bonaparte gave in on March 8, 1812
Paris approved the plans of hydraulic engineer
Jan Blanken Jansz. establish a naval dockyard as safe
mooring and recovery place for the war fleet and as part of
the fortifications of Defense Line Den Helder.
After the fall of the French emperor, the first Dutch king,
William I, commissioned to carry out the plans in 1813.
Hence the name Willemsoord.
Naval ships have been serviced since 1993
on the New Harbor site of the Royal Netherlands Navy. In 1997
the whole complex, with most of the buildings,
national monument.
