The dark dunes is a planted pine forest. The North Holland Landscape ensures that it is transformed into a varied, more natural forest through management interventions. They only manage the western part and the Municipality of Den Helder manages the eastern side. There is a ring-shaped duck pond with banks in the area. The area is very attractive for birds, including the crested tit, long-tailed tit, treecreeper and goldcrest. There are also many mushrooms to be found in the forest, this is due to the slightly moister soil and the available wood from trees.
