This time: the Miljoenenfort, or New Fort Kijkduin.
This fort was intended to replace the outdated Fort Kijkduin around 1900. The Miljoenenfort was located in the middle of the dunes, just past the Huisduinen beach access point. Due to the outbreak of the First World War, the fort's construction was significantly delayed. Although the cannons had already been purchased, the fort was left unfinished in 1920, partly due to the Treaty of Versailles, and the cannons were ultimately scrapped after 1936.
During World War II, the German occupiers further modified the defenses. A coastal battery was placed on top of the fort. In the 1970s, Nieuw Fort Kijkduin was lost due to dike reinforcements. Mystical: are there any remains to be found in the dunes? The outline of the site is still visible on Google Maps.
You can probably guess by now why Nieuw Fort Kijkduin is popularly known as the Miljoenenfort (Millionaire Fort); the fort was never finished and cost millions of guilders.
