Grafelijkheidsduinen

Dunes with walking routes, dune lake and rare nature.

The Grafelijkheidsduinen are a unique dune area near Den Helder. Together with the Donkere Duinen (Dark Dunes), they once formed separate Wadden Islands. Now you can walk, admire mosses, and spot birds around the Harmplas dune lake.

Nature with history

The landscape was formed in the 16th century when the gap between Huisduinen and Ooghduinen silted up. The Harmplas now lies at that location. Due to earlier water extraction, the water level dropped, but it has been restored since 1980. Vulnerable plants are returning, such as sea centaury and heather sedge.

Walking and birdwatching

There are several hiking trails in the northern part of the area. You'll walk along moss-covered dune slopes and spot birds like the black-necked grebe, northern wheatear, and woodlark. The mosses are especially impressive during wet periods.

Nature next to culture

The area is within walking distance of Fort Kijkduin, making it easy to combine nature with cultural history. Parking is available at Admiraal Verhuellplein, and there's a restaurant across from the area.
