De Goede Verwachting (Good Expectation) is a sustainable replica of a historic sawmill. It's located on the Vinkenterrein, a place where the Helderse mill's history comes back to life.
The past comes alive in the city
The original mill stood here until 1897. Sawmills like this one fueled local shipbuilding and were the driving force behind the Golden Age. You can relive that history now, right in the heart of Den Helder.
Technology up close
The mill's sails operate as they once did. Inside, you can see how wood used to be sawn, an impressive feat of engineering. While the wood is no longer actually processed, the process is fully demonstrated.
Building the future together
The mill is still under development. A small donation (for example, with building blocks) will support the initiative. The adjacent information center, "Huis van de Wind," will soon offer space for education and sustainable innovations.
