On May 4, at the Aviator Monument, you pause to reflect on a poignant war story. You commemorate Pilot Sergeant Ernest FV Kidd and Navigator Sergeant Harold C. Stevenson. They lost their lives on July 18, 1943, in Den Helder.
Pause at a place with a story
Their Bristol Beaufighter was shot down during an attack on German ships. The aircraft crashed in the Tweede Vroonstraat. At this spot, their story takes on lasting significance. You feel how close the war still comes here.
Experience a subdued moment
The 4 and 5 May Foundation organizes this commemoration every year. The gathering starts at 7:00 PM with an opening. This is followed by a musical contribution. A wreath-laying ceremony takes place, accompanied by Kunstzin.
Walk along and continue to commemorate
During the commemoration, the Dutch and English national anthems will be played. This gives this moment extra significance. At 7:15 PM, the silent procession departs for the Den Vaderlant Getrouwe monument on Prins Hendriklaan. Walk along and continue the commemoration together.
