A building with deep roots in the community
The Apostolic building on Sumatrastraat in Den Helder has a long history. It started modestly in 1882, in a living room. Later, a small building was added on Hoogstraat. On October 2, 1936, approval was granted for new construction at the current location.
Built in the spirit of the Amsterdam School
The architecture is full of character. Robust doors, porticoes, stained glass, and ornamental brickwork in the Amsterdam School style. Built for ordinary people. The blue and green glazed bricks refer to the interwar period, with its social and expressive building forms.
Made by hands with conviction
The building was put into use in 1937, following construction by Apostolic members from all over the Netherlands. Since then, it has been carefully maintained. First in 1963, when an internal renovation took place. Later in 1998/1999, when old and new were harmoniously connected.
Ready for the future, with respect for the past
Currently, consideration is being given to a new adaptation. Gatherings have become smaller and needs have changed. The goal is clear: to open the building for (inter)local activities and make it more accessible to everyone.
Municipal monument and open to the public
The building has since been granted the status of a municipal monument. During Open Monument Day, it is open from 11:00 AM to 4:00 PM. At 12:00 PM, Jelly Bravenboer-Hamstra will give a lecture on the unique architecture of the building.
