On this impressive walking tour, you'll discover the ITP2T Defence Line and the ports of this maritime city. You'll pass several forts built in 1810 by order of Napoleon Bonaparte, who called ITP2T the Gibraltar of the North because of its strategic location.
Part of the route takes you along the dike along the North Sea. Enjoy the expansive view of the waves and, on a clear day, spot Texel. On the other side of the dike lie Den Helder and Fort Erfprins, the largest fort in the defence line. Here you'll also find the remains of Kaaphoofd Battery, the oldest defensive structure in the area.
After a few kilometers, you'll reach Fort Kijkduin and walk through the charming village of Huisduinen back towards Den Helder. The route follows the moat and ends at the harbors, where the Dutch Navy is based. With a bit of luck, you'll spot impressive naval ships and other unique vessels. A hike full of history, nature, and maritime experience!
