Beach and Sea

Den Helder boasts an impressive 7 kilometers of beach. From historic Huisduinen to the relaxed Julianadorp aan Zee, you'll find seven beach areas, each with its own unique atmosphere. Looking for a lively or peaceful beach? Choose the beach that suits you best.

Three beaches: Julianadorp, Duinoord, and Zandloper, have been awarded the Blue Flag. This is an international quality mark for safety, clean bathing water, and excellent amenities. Here you can swim with peace of mind, parking is free, and the beaches are lifeguarded. Ideal for a carefree day out.

Walking in silence

Dunes and forest

The dunes of Den Helder formed from the old Wadden Islands. Here you'll walk through a landscape steeped in history, variety, and tranquility. Several dune areas lie between Huisduinen and Julianadorp, including the Donkere Duinen (Dark Dunes).

This planted pine forest is becoming increasingly natural thanks to smart nature management. You'll find a circular duck pond, quiet walking paths, and a rich birdlife. Think long-tailed tits, goldcrests, and mushrooms along the route. It's the only true walking forest in the region, and its popularity reflects that.

On the edge of the city lies the Refugium, a newly developed nature reserve with unique plants. Along with the Grafelijkheidsduinen dunes, it is grazed by Scottish Highlanders and Konik horses. They add variety to the landscape and make a walk even more fascinating.

Balg sand

The Balgzand area is one of the richest bird areas in North Holland. At high tide, you can see thousands of birds flocking to the dike. From the 't Kuitje information center, you have an unobstructed view of the mudflats.

Because the area dries out twice a day, many shellfish and shrimp emerge. This attracts birds like spoonbills, terns, and avocets. A bird cliff has been built in the Balgzandpolder specifically for sand martins. Here you can see birds up close, often from the viewing screen.

Green experience in the city

The Helderse Valley

Nature in Den Helder is also available for those who want to explore with children or learn more about the landscape. In the Helderse Valley, on the edge of the dunes, you'll find a petting zoo and playground.

Inside the sustainability center, you can discover the nature in and around Den Helder through exhibitions. A large floor map shows you where everything is located: from beach and dunes to polders and forests. An accessible place for all ages, with plenty of space to play, learn, or simply relax.

Color, tranquility and a view

Bulb fields Julianadorp

In April and May, Julianadorp transforms into a living work of art. The vast bulb fields, overflowing with tulips, hyacinths, and daffodils, paint the landscape with intense hues. This is the beginning of the world's largest flower bulb region, and you're right in the middle of it.
From the dunes, you can see the flowers grow endlessly. But even within the fields themselves, you'll discover new lines, scents, and light. Every step offers a different view. Slow down. Breathe in. And let yourself be embraced by the color and space.
