Touching stories lie hidden among the old gravestones. The Story Route at the General Cemetery Den Helder brings 400 years of history to life. From whalers and rescue heroes to forgotten village figures.
This unique combination of heritage, technology, and experience has now been nominated for the Golden Terebinth, the national award for funerary heritage. Funerary heritage encompasses everything related to cemeteries, grave monuments, and the way we commemorate people. In Den Helder, this heritage becomes tangible, audible, and experienceable.
Using QR codes and Google Maps, visitors discover more than forty life stories in and around the cemetery. From the maritime history in Huisduinen to the impressive Naval Monument and the Jewish cemetery. Each story contributes to the character of the city and connects the past and present in a unique way.
The Story Route is made possible thanks to the efforts of staff, volunteers, and partners such as the Historical Grave Monuments Foundation Den Helder. The nomination for the Golden Terebinth is a wonderful recognition of their commitment, craftsmanship, and passion. On Saturday, February 28th, the three nominees will present their projects to the jury. The winner will then be announced.
