Den Helder wants to develop more strongly as a Blue Port. On March 4, 2026 Parties from various domains are signing up, including culture, economy, education, government, sports, housing, and healthcare.

The agreement is intended to foster greater collaboration in urban development. According to the initiators, Den Helder is at a tipping point. There are concerns about the declining population, the aging population, and a tight labor market.

At the same time, the port presents an opportunity. Den Helder plays a role in maritime safety and the energy transition. The aim is to bring port development and urban development closer together.

On behalf of the Board, Raymond Koen states that work needs to be done on education, housing, and quality of life. He also mentions broad health and a strong social foundation. He believes this requires collaboration between the various domains.

Blue Port is an approach used in other port areas. Economic growth must be combined with urban engagement and a focus on the coast and nature. Den Helder links this to ongoing initiatives, such as METIP and the maritime campus development.

The Board consists of representatives from various Helderse domains. Among them are Fotigui Camara, Peter van den Berg, and Stefan van Schaik.
