From September 23, the Helderse Volksuniversiteit (HVU) will start several new courses: Artificial Intelligence, Wild Cuisine, Memory, The Ancient Greeks, Raja Yoga, and Astronomy. What can you expect from these courses?
AI, or Artificial Intelligence, is receiving a lot of attention as major tech companies have launched a number of groundbreaking products in quick succession, such as the well-known chatGPT.
In three lectures, Jan Martin Jansen will delve deeper into what AI actually is and the developments that led to the current breakthrough. This is a unique opportunity for participants to better understand this technology and discuss its opportunities, as well as its risks. Newspapers and magazines regularly publish articles about cooking with edible flowers and plants. For anyone interested in learning more, the course "The Wild Kitchen" is highly recommended.
Natasja Buis devotes considerable attention to the use of edible flowers, preparing forgotten vegetables, and unique herbs and spices. Besides preparing dishes and arranging plates to create a palette of colors, the program also includes fermenting and preserving herbs and vegetables. "Memory: a course that stays with you!" Over four evenings, Leendert van Dam explores various themes related to memory with the participants. What types of memory are there? What happens when memory is affected by illness? How does this affect a person's identity? All fascinating questions that participants will receive answers to as best as possible, with plenty of room for their own input.
Harry Hofkamp humorously discusses the oldest European civilizations. Using numerous illustrations and ancient stories and myths, he transports his audience to the world of "The Very Oldest Greeks." This course is recommended for anyone who loves history, but also for anyone who thinks the past is a thing of the past.
Raja Yoga is about developing consciousness and controlling your mind. It improves all aspects of life—physical, emotional, and mental.
Natalie Richards will gladly guide you through 10 lessons in this introduction to the most original and complete form of yoga. Participants don't need any prior experience, but they should bring their own yoga mat and meditation cushion. Infinity, vast distances, galaxies, and dark matter. The universe fascinates young and old. Harold Plooijer teaches the "Astronomy" course on this topic.
The course consists of seven evenings, supplemented by an eighth evening in which participants will observe several interesting celestial objects with their naked eye and a telescope. The Astronomy course is open to everyone, and no specific prior knowledge of astronomy is required. However, astronomy is a science subject, and therefore a general basic knowledge of the science subjects at least at the pre-vocational secondary education level (or equivalent) is strongly recommended to be able to follow the lessons well. Information evening: Wednesday, September 4, 7:00 PM - 8:30 PM in School 7. For anyone who still has questions and/or would like to talk to a teacher, we are organizing this information evening for upcoming courses in School 7.
