The municipality of Den Helder, together with InWerking, is extending the Inland Shipping project by one year.
In this project, twenty young people from our municipality will be given the opportunity to work and learn in the
inland shipping. They can become sailors and sometimes even progress to skipper.
The project is specifically intended for young people who have difficulty feeling at home in a regular
school or in a normal learning environment. Through practice-oriented learning and by working together with
Employers give them a better chance of work and independence. The collaboration between the
municipality and InOperation officially started on January 1, 2024. Before that, the project was already running through the
Employer Service Point. During that time, a lot of experience was gained in guiding young people to
sustainable work.
The results are good: many young people succeed, become independent and obtain a starting qualification (minimum
MBO level 2). This means they do not have to remain dependent on benefits. This shows that
project works well, for the young people and for the municipality.
Councillor for Participation Niels Nanning says: “Customised solutions and collaboration with employers make it possible
difference. We give young people opportunities, peace of mind, and a clear goal. This is a good example of how
”With the Participation Act we not only offer opportunities, but also solve social problems.”
Ian van Schie is a former participant. He successfully completed the program and is very enthusiastic:
“When I started, I had no diploma and little future. Thanks to the Inland Shipping project, I was able to learn and
Working on the water. Now I have my boating license, a permanent position on board, and I chart my own course.
For me this means a future full of freedom.”
The Youth Center Den Helder is an important partner in the project. Many young people come to the
Youth Center in contact with the municipality and InWerking. The Youth Center helps young people aged 16 to 27
year with questions about work, education, housing, money and personal problems. Young people can get help there
receive guidance, coaching and practical matters. For example, looking for work, contacting
Employers or debt assistance. More information can be found at www.denhelder.nl/onderwijs-en
