The Story Route at the General Cemetery has won an award. The project finished third in the Golden Terebinth competition on Saturday. The jury praised the combination of heritage, education, and city history.

According to the jury, this route allows young and old to connect with former residents. The route combines a walk with digital stories, making it easy for many people to follow.

The award was presented with a nod to the past. Sea rescuer Dorus Rijkers was present as a historical figure. Monique Markus and Henri Lüdwig also accepted the award.

Den Helder had been nominated for the award since December 2025. There were seven entries in total. The Helderse Historical Grave Monuments Foundation nominated the municipality.

The Story Route uses videos and podcasts related to graves and sites. These stories were created by Jack Ambriola and Maarten Noot. The jury sees opportunities to expand the route.

Third place receives a certificate and €250. The Terebinth Foundation awards the prize biennially. The award recognizes their commitment to historical cemeteries.

The route can be found at Kerkhoflaan 1 in Den Helder. Everything is also available online at verhalenbegraafplaatsdenhelder.nl.
