Groote Kaap Lighthouse: a striking beacon
You'll soon pass the Groote Kaap lighthouse. This nearly 17-meter-high steel tower still guides ships with light signals. During the day, the fiery red tower offers a stunning contrast against the blue sky and the surrounding horizon. A perfect spot to pause and enjoy the view.
History in the dunes: Fort Kijkduin and Lange Jaap
Through the dune landscape, you reach Museum Fort Kijkduin, an impressive national monument built in 1811 on the orders of Napoleon Bonaparte. Here you can learn more about the maritime history of the region. A little further on, you'll see the Lange Jaap lighthouse, which has been burning since 1878. At almost 64 meters tall, it is the tallest cast-iron lighthouse in Europe and an unmistakable landmark of Den Helder.
