Exhibition Shipyard work is human work at the Navy Museum

Tags

Discover how the Rijkswerf provided work and pride to generations of Helden residents.

Den Helder is a naval city. But behind the ships and the uniforms lies another story: that of the people who worked at the shipyard. Yard work is people work Step into their world. You learn about hard workdays, steady incomes, and the power of community.

A closed world from within

The Rijkswerf was impenetrable to outsiders for a long time. But within its walls, everything revolved around craftsmanship, solidarity, and survival. You'll discover how thousands of Helderse families depended on this work, often under difficult circumstances.

Security and solidarity

Despite the hard work and meager wages, the shipyard offered something valuable: structure, safety, and pride. This combination made the shipyard more than just a workplace. It was a second home in good times and bad.

An undeniable part of Den Helder

During its peak years, 10%, a member of the local workforce, worked at the shipyard. This exhibition shows the significant impact this had on the city and how its legacy is still palpable today.
