At the Den Helder Art Library, you'll find something special: canned mackerel, packaged as a work of art. Discover the colorful packaging by JOSE Gourmet, designed by nearly 90 Portuguese illustrators and artists. Each can is a miniature work of art, with its own unique story. And yes, the fish is actually for sale in the arts shop.
Meet makers who add something
The packaging was designed by Luís Mendonça, who isn't a packaging designer. He deliberately chooses artists he admires. What matters is the drive, not the resume. The art on the cans is contemporary, unique, and anything but standard. The JOSE conservas are born from craftsmanship and a love of honest food.
Expect more than fish
From mackerel fillets in olive oil to spicy pâté: every product is carefully crafted. Wild-caught fish, processed with respect for nature and people. The flavors are intense and demand a substantial counterbalance. Think: rye bread with pickles, or a cold potato salad with a kick. Even the Swedish royal family enjoys this quality.
Come and see from January 17th
The cans will be on display and for sale from January 17 to February 21, 2026. In addition to the JOSE story, you'll also see work by Gijs Frieling and Door Dogger. Curious? Visit the Art Library and discover this surprising exhibition.
