The Donkere Duinen is a planted pine forest. The North Holland Landscape Agency is transforming it into a diverse, more natural forest through management measures. They manage only the western part, while the Municipality of Den Helder manages the eastern side. The area features a circular duck pond with banks. The area is very attractive to birds, including crested tit, long-tailed tit, treecreeper, and goldcrest. Mushrooms are also abundant in the forest, thanks to the slightly moister soil and the presence of tree wood.
