The oldest cemetery in Den Helder is located on Kerkhoflaan. Once intended for the village of Huisduinen, it's now a place where you can experience nature, history, and memories together.
Ancient sailor's graves
The cemetery dates back to the 16th century. In the oldest part, you'll find the gravestones of whalers and sailors. Anchors and ships on the stones tell stories about the region's maritime history.
Remembering and connecting
In addition to seaman's graves, there are war graves, a Jewish cemetery, and a memorial for star children. Monuments commemorate victims of World War II and crew members who perished at sea.
New: story route with QR codes
Since 2024, there's been a route through the cemetery using QR codes. Scan them to hear the personal stories behind the stones. This way, a walk through the greenery also becomes a journey through time.
