At the heart of Den Helder lies a special reminder of the Second World War: the Sani hospital bunker 638. Built in 1942-1943 by the Kriegsmarine, this medical bunker was set up as an emergency hospital for lightly and seriously injured soldiers.
What makes this bunker unique?
This rare Sani bunker housed an operating room where wounded people were stabilized before being transported further inland. One doctor and four nurses worked here under difficult conditions, caring for up to 20 wounded at a time.
The bunker is a tangible reminder of Den Helder's wartime history and is one of the few remaining medical bunkers from the Atlantic Wall.
