Few people know it, but Den Helder was the first German air force to fly during World War II. most bombed city in the Netherlands. More than 160 bombings reduced the city to rubble. Yet Den Helder – damaged, partly destroyed – rose from the ashes. A story of loss and resilience.
The air raids targeted the strategic Rijkswerf Willemsoord, which fell into the hands of the German Kriegsmarine during the occupation. This location, once a vital workshop for the Royal Netherlands Navy, thus became a military target for Allied bombers.
Throughout the year, stories from this period are brought to life with a varied program. Think of lectures, walking and cycling tours, exhibitions and interactive audio tours. All aimed at making this important history visible and tangible – for residents, visitors, and future generations.
An initiative of Den Helder Heritage Foundation, in collaboration with local makers, historians and cultural partners.
