Den Helder is known for its naval port, but did you know you'll also find beautiful nature here? The Helderse Dunes form a vast nature reserve in the Kop van Noord-Holland region. Here you'll experience the feeling of wilderness while staying close to the city.

Different routes for every hiker
In the Helderse Dunes there are plenty of opportunities for a nice walk.

Several routes start from the visitor center:

Blue route: 6.1 km

Green route: 2.1 km

Pink route: 8.7 km (no dogs allowed)

Orange route: 9.4 km

Yellow route: 12.1 km

Black route: 2.8 km

Along the way, you can catch a glimpse of the iconic De Lange Jaap lighthouse in Huisduinen. Want to make your walk even more special? Then visit Fort Kijkduin and discover its rich history.

Convenient starting points and parking options
Free parking is available at the Helderse Vallei Visitor Center. From here, you can also climb the observation tower for stunning views of the area. The trailhead and parking lot are located at De Helderse Vallei 9-11 in Den Helder.

Enjoy after your walk
Feeling peckish after a lovely walk? Nearby, you'll find cozy eateries like Nogal Wiedus, Duinoord's Steakhouse, Bospaviljoen De Vallei, and Pannenkoekenvallei. Here you can relax with a snack and a drink.
