Watertoren

In 1856, Den Helder was one of the first cities in the Netherlands to have its own water tower and several meters of water mains, located in Huisduinen. After about 50 years, the tower was worn out, and a central, larger tower was needed. In 1908, the new water tower was built in the heart of Den Helder. In 1959, the tower's beautiful brickwork was plastered with a gray cement layer to give it a modern look. However, in 2005, the 1908 style was restored, the cement layer was removed, and the tower looked as it had in its original state.

After years of legal wrangling, it looks like in 2019 both residents and visitors will finally be able to visit the interior of the beautifully renovated water tower.
