Discover Fort Harssens: an underground armored fort full of stories

Step into history with a tour of Fort Harssens. This armored fort, dating from 1880, is tucked away beneath the Port Office at Den Helder and is normally closed to the public. Guides will lead you through dark corridors, where the atmosphere of 1900 still lingers.

Dive into the past

The fort was built as part of Stelling Den Helder (Foreign Defence Line Den Helder). You walk through empty spaces and narrow corridors where Dutch soldiers, the German occupying forces, and later the Royal Netherlands Navy once stayed. Nothing here has been furnished: everything remains as it was.

Watch your steps

The route is underground and narrow or dark in some places. Steps and uneven surfaces make the fort less suitable for wheelchair users or those with limited mobility. Children are only permitted when accompanied by an adult.

Limited access

You may only enter the fort after registering at least five days in advance. Your name and date of birth are required due to the military location. There is room for 25 participants per tour. Register via the website. Full = Full.

How do you get a grip on your past, how do you get a grip on love? How do you get a grip on a world that is murky and where boundaries are vague? Making the right decision, managing the situation, keeping yourself in check; it seems harder than ever. Before you know it, you step over something or bump into something. Perhaps it is better to let go as much as possible. After all, too much grip isn't good either. But how do you do that, and what do you let go of? What is important enough to hold on to? The answer to all these questions and more: you won't get it during the performance. Or well, maybe a little bit. What you do get, in any case, is Grip: a performance that doesn't let go easily.

In the 1950s and 60s, Johnny Cash realized his own 'American dream'. He worked his way up from a cotton picker's son to a superstar with his own television show. He was a true storyteller, but he didn't always stick strictly to the truth. Joost Botman delves into the history of Cash, 'The Man in Black'. His story is full of contradictions: drug use and religion, patriotism and conceit, a family man with a fascination for dark themes.
