On Thursday, March 26th, you'll hear stories about the sea, ice, and journeys to the far north. The lecture begins at 7:30 PM. You're welcome to join us in this atmospheric and historic venue at Huisduinen.
Step aboard a special story
You'll hear the story of Aerjen Jansz. Ruijs, a sailor from Zijpe. He sailed on a whaling ship bound for Greenland in 1783 and 1784. During these voyages, he kept a diary. This is unusual for an ordinary crew member. It offers a rare glimpse into life on board, the dangers at sea, and encounters with the Inuit.
Discover the world behind the news
After more than 230 years, the journal remained within the family. It was later housed in the Regional Archives in Alkmaar, where it was named Archive Item of the Year in 2016. During this evening, Jack Muis will talk about the manuscript and the book that emerged from it, bringing Aerjen's story closer to home.
Travel with us to Spitsbergen
Erik Verheul takes you to the far north, using his own footage from his travels to Spitsbergen. You'll see the area where Aerjen sailed over 200 years earlier. Then you'll hear about the rise and fall of Dutch whaling. This way, you'll experience personal stories and historical context in a single evening.
Experience an evening with meaning
Your visit also supports the Huisduinerkerkje. The €5 entrance fee benefits this special location. There are approximately 75 spaces available. It's full, so please register in advance by email if you'd like to attend.
