Discover the hidden stories of Den Helder during Open Monument Day 2025

Safe and reliable exploration close to home
On Saturday, September 13th and Sunday, September 14th, 2025, Den Helder will once again open its monumental doors. During the national Open Monument Day, you'll have the chance to visit buildings you wouldn't normally be able to enter. This 39th edition focuses on the theme Built to last. A wonderful opportunity to rediscover the rich history of this maritime city.

Special places you didn't know about yet
Den Helder is much more than you might think. Forts, churches, houses, and barracks each tell a story. During this weekend, you can take guided tours and listen to engaging storytellers. Discover, for example, how the Den Helder Defence Line was originally built to protect the city. And why this defense line still impresses today.

A nautical city full of history and character
As a fortified city by the sea, Den Helder exudes history. Water, wind, and the sea are always nearby. This is precisely what makes this city unique in the Netherlands. Experience this firsthand during Open Monument Day. Whether you enjoy robust architecture, personal stories, or simply a peaceful, meaningful walk: there's something for everyone.

Free admission and accessible to everyone
Admission to all participating monuments is free. This makes this weekend an accessible way to get away. You don't have to go far for something special. And whether you come alone, with your partner, or with (grand)children, there are activities for all ages.
