On Saturday 12 and Sunday 13 September 2026, Den Helder opens its monumental doors once again. During the national Open Monument Day, you will have the opportunity to visit buildings that you normally cannot simply enter. This year's theme is Resilient Heritage: In times of uncertainty. A wonderful opportunity to rediscover the rich history of this maritime city.
As a fortified city by the sea, Den Helder exudes history. Water, wind, and the sea are always nearby. This is precisely what makes this city unique in the Netherlands. Experience this firsthand during Open Monument Day. Whether you enjoy robust architecture, personal stories, or simply a peaceful, meaningful walk: there's something for everyone.
Admission to all participating monuments is free. This makes this weekend an accessible way to get away. You don't have to go far for something special. And whether you come alone, with your partner, or with (grand)children, there are activities for all ages.
The program will be further announced in the coming months. Expect a diverse mix of culture, history, and fun activities. Want to secure a spot on a popular tour? Keep an eye on the news. Some spots fill up quickly.
Are you the owner or manager of a monument? Register your monument here and participate. This way, visitors can also discover your special location during Open Monument Day.
