On Saturday 12 and Sunday 13 September 2026, Den Helder opens doors that normally remain closed. During Open Monument Day Den Helder 2026 you will discover special buildings, hidden places, and stories from different eras. The national theme this year is Resilient Heritage – In Times of Uncertainty. A theme that becomes particularly palpable and visible in this maritime city.
Den Helder is a city that has had to constantly adapt to change throughout the centuries. Its location by the sea, the navy, wars, and new functions have left their mark on buildings and the landscape. Some places retained their original function, while others were given a completely new life. During Open Monument Day, you will discover how the past is still part of the city of today.
On Sunday, September 13, the past literally comes to life during the Historic Tour. Starting at 11:00 AM, classic cars and special vehicles will depart from Willemsoord for a festive route through Den Helder. This year, they will also drive along the dike, with the sea as a unique backdrop. Around 12:30 PM, the vehicles will return to Willemsoord, where you can view a number of special examples up close and soak up the atmosphere.
On Saturday, September 12, after the official opening, hop on your bike for a free historical tour through Den Helder. You depart at 10:30 AM from the Ontmoetingskerk in Julianadorp and cycle through the dunes towards the Huisduinerkerkje. Along the way, you will hear stories about the landscape, the Second World War, and the history of Den Helder. The tour lasts approximately two hours and is suitable for young and old.
