Over 110 extra temporary parking spaces to compensate for the loss of the parking deck.

Good news! The owner of the Kroonpassage has transferred the section of the shopping center to be demolished to Zeestad. The Kroonpassage has been vacant for a long time, so it is important that this central location in the city center is given a new purpose. Demolition work will start on July 1st; from that moment on, motorists can use the temporary parking areas set up in Koningdwarsstraat and Prinsenstraat.

Development

A section of the Kroonpassage will remain and is being renovated by the current owner, Black Fish, for a new supermarket and retail space. Contractors Van Leeuwen Zwanenburg Sloopwerken and Sloopbedrijf JH Oosterbeek have been commissioned by Zeestad to demolish the remaining part of the Kroonpassage. This will make way for a new square. In addition to creating a pleasant environment, parking is also being improved, and sustainability and climate change have been taken into account in the design of the square.

Renovation

Initially, work will begin with strip demolition, which means stripping the building bare while leaving the stone and concrete components in place. The roofing of the parking deck will also be removed. After the construction holiday, the building will be further demolished using heavy equipment. The stony materials will be crushed on-site into foundation material for roads. A large portion of this will be reused on-site.

The demolition work will continue through November of this year. The construction of the new supermarket and retail space is scheduled from November of this year to November 2026. In March 2026, Zeestad expects to be able to start landscaping the new square (Kroonplein).

Parking

As of July 1, parking is no longer permitted on the Kroonpassage parking deck. In consultation with the municipality, two sites have been temporarily made suitable as parking areas:

in Koningdwarsstraat (entrance via Prins Hendriklaan) and in Prinsenstraat, at the location of the former Pizzeria Costa. There is space for at least 110 cars.

Information

Residents and business owners around the Kroonpassage have been informed by letter. Zeestad is making every effort to draw attention to the alternative parking areas: all businesses in the city center are receiving flyers and a poster to show visitors where the extra parking spaces are located, including recreational businesses. The alternative parking spots are also being promoted via various social media platforms. Furthermore, Zeestad holds office hours every Wednesday from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. at Citymarketing, Spoorstraat 2.
