Aldermen Petra Bais and Fotigui Camara, along with children's council member David Zijderlaan, unveiled the first of four new posters on Thursday about combating litter. The drawings on the posters were created by students from primary schools in Julianadorp and Den Helder. City poet Yanaika Zomer wrote beautiful poems to accompany them, which will be displayed alongside the drawings on billboards. The posters will be displayed throughout the municipality from June 3rd to 16th.
The aldermen came to the Prinses Margrietschool in Julianadorp to honor the creators of one of the winning drawings: Sherina and Rianne. Their entire class also received a nice prize, and the school received a billboard featuring the poster. "A beautiful drawing, with great attention to detail," Alderman Bais praised the two young artists. "Moreover, the message that littering on the street is not okay comes across clearly. Your poster will definitely help keep Den Helder clean."“
Project 'Stop Litter'‘
The drawings were created as part of the "Stop Litter" project. The project aims to raise awareness of this issue and reduce litter. The district administrators, the children's council, the Helderse Vallei, and primary schools collaborated on this project. The district administrators delivered a litter collection kit to all primary schools in the municipality, intended for children in grades 7 and 8. The kit included teaching materials, an assignment from the Helderse Vallei, games, and an invitation to a drawing contest. Alderman Camara: "The litter problem is a priority for the children's council. Students from primary schools in Den Helder and Julianadorp are tackling this problem together with the children's council. This poster campaign is a wonderful example of how children are working together to improve their environment."‘
Children's Council chooses winners
Thirteen primary schools submitted artwork. From all the submitted drawings, the children's council selected four winning entries. Besides Sherina and Rianne's, these are Amy's (De Fontein), Zola's (De Vlieberg), and Gina's (De Driemaster) drawings. They too will soon be honored, and their classes will receive a nice prize. All students whose drawings didn't win a prize will receive a consolation prize to thank them for their efforts.
