Michiel de Ruyter: naval hero of his time

Dive into the era of Michiel de Ruyter this summer. The Maritime Museum in Den Helder has a special program about De Ruyter this summer. This famous naval hero passed away 350 years ago, but his clever inventions are still used by the Dutch Navy.

The program starts with a lecture organized by the Friends of the Maritime Museum Foundation on Thursday, July 2. Curator Graddy Boven will speak about De Ruyter's final year of life. This lecture begins on July 2 at 2:00 PM; tickets are available for purchase online or at the museum. 1676, the final year of Michiel de Ruyter's life. Admiral forever. In April 1676, he sailed along the coast of Sicily with his Dutch-Spanish fleet to track down French warships. At the time, France was securing trading rights at the expense of Spain; the Netherlands supported its ally—partly out of its own commercial interest. The escalating tension culminated on April 22, 1676, in the Battle of Mount Etna, where De Ruyter confronted the French Admiral Abraham Duquesne.

The temporary exhibition Michiel de Ruyter. Admiral Forever tells the story of this fierce battle, the wounding and death of De Ruyter, his state funeral, and the honors paid to him afterwards.

A summer full of activities. For families with children, there are various activities at the Maritime Museum throughout the summer holidays: Michiels Matrozen – Children can test if they are as strong as a sailor during the children's bootcamp on Wednesdays and Fridays.

Children's Workshop: Build a wooden submarine, dress up as a sailor, build with LEGO, or take a family photo in the style of Michiel de Ruyter's family.

Rope making: A professional rope maker demonstrates this centuries-old craft on August 18 & 20, and visitors can help out.

Michiel de Ruyter scavenger hunt: Children discover the life and tactics of De Ruyter through play.
