You can see Lange Jaap from afar. This 63-meter-high lighthouse is impossible to miss. Since 1878, it has stood guard over the coast of Den Helder. An impressive beacon and the pride of the city.
Europe's tallest cast-iron tower
Lange Jaap is the tallest still-operating lighthouse in the Netherlands. It's also the tallest cast-iron lighthouse in Europe. Its 16-sided shape and red color make it unique. In clear weather, its light can be seen up to 54 kilometers away. For the residents of Den Helder, seeing the lighthouse's lights feels like coming home.
Rest point by the sea
You can't look inside, but there's plenty to discover outside. There are benches overlooking the sea. An information board and QR code tell the whole story. Take a breath of fresh air, learn a little: the perfect break during your visit.
Full of stories
The tower survived war, storms, and near demolition. It was camouflaged, fitted with radar, and later damaged. Yet, it still stands. Restoration plans are underway. Meanwhile, Lange Jaap continues to inspire visitors.
