What once began with courageous fishermen and villagers grew into the Royal Netherlands Lifeboat Society (KNRM). From the moment you enter, you are immediately immersed in this remarkable story. You experience local history and read how the Helderse beachcombers became the first rescuers. This is where your adventure begins, where you not only learn about the history but are also inspired by the courage and perseverance of the rescuers.
Go on a rescue mission
There is something for everyone to do at the museum. Children are allowed to touch almost everything, ensuring that even the youngest visitors have a great time. Step aboard the interactive navigation boat Solo and take the helm yourself, or experience what a force 10 gale feels like in the wind tunnel. The combination of beautiful ship models, historical instruments, and authentic black-and-white films makes the museum a wonderful experience for adults as well.
Experience Den Helder in a special way with a cruise through the inner harbor on the historic lifeboat Johan de Witt.
From April to November, at the Rescue Museum, you can not only learn all about rescuers of the past and present, but also step aboard a real historic lifeboat yourself. The boat crew will tell you all about the sights you pass during the tour. The tour can be booked at the reception desk and lasts about thirty minutes. The trip is extra fun for children, as they are even allowed to steer the boat for a short while and earn their own skipper's diploma! You can find the current sailing times on the website.
