Answers to all your questions about the sand sculptures in Julianadorp

Frequently asked questions about the sand spectacle

Sand sculptures are made from specially compacted sand. By firmly pressing it with water, a firm mass is created. Artists then carve and shape their designs from this mass, layer by layer.

It is not just any beach sand from Julianadorp that is used.
For sand sculptures, we use sharp, angular sand, usually sourced from rivers or sand pits. (Village) beach sand is too round and smooth, making it difficult for artists to build with.

No adhesives or chemical additives are used. Just clean sand and water—that's all you need.

Visible in the open air for months

As long as the weather cooperates, sand sculptures last for months. In dry weather, they're surprisingly durable. The sculptures in Julianadorp can be admired all summer long.

Don't worry, they are prepared for that

Sand sculptures are well-suited for rain showers. Because the sand is compacted, it won't easily wash away. Even in heavy rain or gusts of wind, the sculptures remain standing. Only heavy hail or weeks of rain can cause damage – but we're prepared for that, too.

Minor repairs when necessary

Usually not. The sculptures are finished in one sitting. Sometimes the artist makes a small adjustment if necessary, but most of it remains as is.

More than a simple scoop

Sand artists use trowels, palette knives, spoons, modeling wood, brushes, and even old teaspoons—anything that helps reveal fine details.

Almost anything, if prepared properly

Yes. From castles to faces, from animals to landscapes. The possibilities are endless, as long as you carefully consider stability and balance. Our artists can create almost anything, even realistic portraits.

No, everyone can learn it

Sand art is a craft. Anyone can learn the basics, even children ages 5 and up. With a little patience, practice, and fun, you'll go a long way. You can experience this for yourself during workshops.

A team of international artists

Several sand artists are collaborating on the Zandspektakel (Sand Spectacle) in Julianadorp. During the installation period (starting May 4th), you can see them working live at the various locations. This way, you can experience the process up close.
