Balgzandpolder – A paradise for birds and those seeking peace and quiet

Balgzandpolder – Birdwatching in peace and quiet

Looking to escape the hustle and bustle and enjoy peace, fresh sea air, and a unique natural experience? The Balgzandpolder, on the edge of Den Helder, is a perfect spot for nature lovers who want to see birds up close. This protected nature reserve has been specifically designed as a resting and foraging area for migratory birds. During high tide in the Wadden Sea, it becomes particularly lively, and you can observe the birds undisturbed via a viewing screen.

Admire special bird species up close

In the Balgzandpolder, you'll spot species you don't see every day. Spoonbills, oystercatchers, redshanks, and various ducks are found here in large numbers. With a bit of luck, you'll even see rarer birds like the spotted redshank or greenshank. Thanks to the open location and the viewing screen, you can observe the birds quietly without disturbing them.

A safe breeding place for birds

Since 2016, the Balgzandpolder has had a unique addition: a specially designed bird rock. This five-meter-high rock provides a safe nesting site, including for sand martins that build their nests in the walls. Predators like foxes cannot reach it, allowing the birds to breed undisturbed.

Relaxing walk with panoramic views

Besides birdwatching, the Balgzandpolder is also ideal for a relaxing walk along the waterfront. The expansive views and tranquil atmosphere make it a wonderful place to fully immerse yourself in nature. You don't have to be an experienced birdwatcher to enjoy this area—just a little curiosity is enough.
