At the end of the 18th century, a fierce conflict raged in the Netherlands between supporters and opponents of the House of Orange. This walk takes you past places where this history becomes tangible. You'll hear how the French invaded the Netherlands and the Batavian Republic was founded. A time when the House of Orange was forced to flee, straight across the North Sea.

Forts as silent witnesses to great changes

In 1811, Napoleon himself visited Den Helder. The French emperor commissioned the construction of forts here, which you can still admire today. You literally walk past these impressive structures—sturdy, recognizable, and full of stories. They recall a time when nothing seemed certain, but when the Netherlands ultimately found peace again.
