On Tuesday evening, June 16, she will be the focus of a lecture at the School 7 Library in Den Helder. Corrine Kramer will take you through the intriguing story of 'The Coupon Queen'. The lecture is being held at the invitation of NUT Den Helder and the Willem Frederik Karel Masonic Lodge.
Get to know a brave woman
Jacoba van Tongeren was the leader and founder of resistance group Groep 2000. She was the daughter of Hermanus van Tongeren, chairman of Dutch Freemasonry from 1929 to 1941. This allowed the resistance group to utilize the network of Freemasons and have access to financial resources. You will discover how her upbringing, schooling, and attitude to life shaped her into a decisive woman.
Hear how one network saved lives
In the summer of 1940, Jacoba came into contact with the illegal resistance. Despite worries and doubts, she took action. She helped approximately 4,500 people in hiding survive with food coupons and safe houses. She delivered some of those coupons herself. That is how she earned her nickname: 'the Coupon Queen'.
Pause and reflect on a story that continues to move
The lecture takes place in the 81st anniversary year of the Liberation. The evening also coincides with the 200th anniversary of Freemasons' Lodge Willem Frederik Karel in Den Helder. You are welcome from 19:30 to 22:00. Participation costs €10.00, including two drinks. Tickets are available via the Kopgroep Libraries website.
