The National Lifeboat Museum is proud to announce its newest acquisition: the motor launch Christiaen Huygens. This historic lifeboat, which played a vital role in the rescue service, is returning to Den Helder. The Christiaen Huygens will go on display at the museum starting March 27, 2025, exactly 50 years after the tragic disaster in which it sank during the rescue of the Hasco II.

A story of courage and loss

On March 27, 1975, the Christiaen Huygens sank during a rescue operation. Two courageous rescuers lost their lives, an event that left a deep mark on Den Helder and beyond. The disaster symbolizes the risks and sacrifices rescuers are willing to make to help others. The National Rescue Museum aims to share this story with its visitors in an honorable and poignant way.

Commemoration and unveiling

On March 27, 2025, the National Rescue Museum will hold a special ceremony to commemorate the disaster and unveil the Christiaen Huygens in its new home. The ceremony will commemorate the disaster's impact on the community and the rescue service. The boat, which has been meticulously restored, will be given a prominent place in the museum, allowing visitors to experience its story firsthand.

Crowdfunding for a meaningful exhibition

To realize this exhibition in a dignified manner, the museum has launched a crowdfunding campaign. The goal is to bring the history of the Christiaen Huygens and the 1975 disaster to life in an impressive and respectful way. With the support of donors, the museum aims to develop an interactive and informative exhibition that does justice to the heroism of the rescuers and the impact of the rescue service in the Netherlands.
