Festive opening
The new bridge between Willemsoord and the city center was officially opened on Thursday, July 24. Alderman Niels Nanning and Marichel Weel of Zeestad performed the official opening by cutting a symbolic ribbon.
With the arrival of the bridge, there is finally a wide and safe connection for pedestrians and cyclists between Willemsoord and the city center. This new crossing is five meters wide and much more user-friendly.
Bridge with character
The bridge was designed by architectural firm West8. It is a so-called bascule bridge, which means it can open and close for shipping. The details are a special feature of the design. Anchors are incorporated into the railings, along with the city logo and the old Royal Shipyard emblem. A nod to the maritime past and the contemporary character of Willemsoord.
Jutterhaven Days
The timing couldn't be better. Visitors to the Jutterhavendagen from July 25 to 27 can use the bridge immediately. This provides cyclists and pedestrians with a short route between events at Willemsoord and the city center.
What follows?
The bridge will soon connect to the new Francien de Zeeuw Promenade. Until then, cyclists may cross the bridge, but must dismount briefly at Weststraat. Later this year, that point will also be addressed, so that the entire area becomes an accessible walking and cycling route.
