In 2024 and 2025, the end of the Second World War, 80 years ago, will be commemorated nationally.
Den Helder suffered greatly from the violence of the war. Today, the Royal Netherlands Navy is working in various locations in our city to promote peace and security. Concepts like war and freedom are deeply connected to this city, and the municipality of Den Helder, like many other municipalities in the Netherlands, has embraced this theme year and hopes to inspire residents to express this theme in many activities and events. To support organizers, an 80 Years of Freedom coordinator is available to assist organizers in various ways, including advice, mediation, and contributions to expenses.
Organizing activities
To make this theme year a success, the municipality of Den Helder is calling on organizers (large and small) to devise and organize activities around this theme between April 2025 and September 2025. All activities will be supported by PR: visual material will be available, and all associated activities will be posted on various platforms within the municipality of Den Helder and the province.
You can also request a contribution towards the costs of your activity/event. The municipality of Den Helder is making €60,000 available to support organizers in creating beautiful and/or impressive themed activities. The conditions for activities can be found at www.80jaarvrijheiddenhelder.nl. The registration form is also available there. Applications that meet the requirements can be submitted until November 16th. Whether your activity or event will receive a contribution will be announced in early December. Kick off Theme Year 80 Years of Freedom
During the theme year's kick-off meeting, there was great enthusiasm to work together to make this theme year a success. Ideas like a liberation festival, exhibitions, concerts, markets, youth debates, educational programs, and more emerged. Besides numerous ideas, assistance was also provided with facilities and resources, making it possible to launch many wonderful activities despite the limited budget for the theme year.
