Anyone wishing to know more about the current status of the Dijkkwartier, the plan for a combined residential area involving the reinforcement of the sea dike, is cordially invited to an open meeting on Thursday, July 7, 2022, at the Petrus & Paulus Church on the Kerkgracht.

Between four and eight o'clock, illustrations, photos, and scale models will be displayed in the church, and it will be possible to speak with representatives of the Water Board, Housing Foundation, municipality, and Zeestad about the project.

It is also possible to take a look, while enjoying a cup of coffee or tea, at the site on the dike where phase 1 of the plan will be realized. That is, provided it becomes clear in the course of this year that it is financially and technically feasible, and the municipal council, the water board, and the Housing Foundation give their approval. In that case, Den Helder will gain a residential area with 200-250 owner-occupied and (social) rental homes in that first phase.

Ultimately, around 1,000 homes will be built along the dike over the coming decades, restoring the city's connection to the sea and ensuring the dike is safe for 200 years. On Thursday evening, council and committee members from virtually all municipal council factions, as well as administrators from the Water Board and Housing Foundation, were briefed in a packed hall at Lands End. Dozens of bunkers still lie beneath De Nollen. Ruud van de Wint made them part of his art landscape. In this way, history, nature, and imagination come together in Den Helder.
