Sometimes you don't have to go far at all for a fun family outing. Seven-year-old Linde and five-year-old Maartje hopped on their bikes with their parents for a tour past the sand sculptures of Julianadorp. From one side of the village to the other, with plenty of reasons along the way to get off and take a good look.

The bike ride was also a fun way to revisit Julianadorp. A different artwork awaited at every location. The girls looked at the sculptures up close, discussed what they saw together, and had one big question in particular: how do they actually make this?

How does loose sand turn into a work of art?

In the old village, Linde and Maartje found the answer to that question. On an information board, they read how a sand sculpture is constructed. Next to it stood a series of smaller sculptures showing the making process step by step.

From an initial rough shape to the smallest details: every phase was given its own visual representation. As a result, the girls could not only look at the final result but also see how much work goes into it. For Linde, this immediately became her favorite spot on the trip.

Jellyfish and fish by the sea

Afterwards, the family cycled on towards the beach. Here stood two more sculptures, with the sea in the background. Those who looked quickly saw mainly large sand statues. But those who stood a little longer discovered more and more.

Linde and Maartje suddenly saw fish and jellyfish that had gone completely unnoticed before. It was precisely the searching for small details together that made this stop extra fun. The sculptures turned out to reveal something new with every glance.

A spectacular finale at Landal

The last stop was at Landal Beach Resort Ooghduyne. There, the bike ride had an unexpectedly cheerful ending, because Bollo also came to take a look at the sand sculptures.

For Maartje, that was undoubtedly the best moment of the day. She got to have her picture taken with Bollo, and her favorite stop was quickly chosen. After viewing the sand art, the family stayed to enjoy a meal and play at Landal.

And so, a bike ride through their own village became a complete family outing. Along the way, Linde and Maartje were busy with art, movement, searching, and asking questions. Meanwhile, their parents had plenty of time to take a new look at Julianadorp from their bikes.

Plan your own route and take the time to look closely along the way.

Out and about with the children on your own

The sand sculptures are scattered across various locations in Julianadorp. You can decide for yourself where to start and which places to combine. The route is easy to do by bike, and along the way you can stop at the beach, a restaurant or café, or a place where the children can play for a while.

Be sure to take the time to look closely together. As Linde and Maartje discovered, you often see much more in a sand sculpture than you think at first glance.

The sand sculptures are scattered throughout Julianadorp and are easy to combine with each other.
