Discover Fort Westoever during Open Monument Days

Fort Westoever

It was built during the excavation of the North Holland Canal in 1825. Fort Oostoever lies on the other side of the canal. Both forts served to keep the canal and the defensive dike leading to Fort Dirksz Admiraal (and Fort Erfprins) under fire. The bomb-proof barracks of Fort Westoever were used for storing ammunition and artillery equipment, and for housing soldiers.

In 1954, the Royal Netherlands Navy took over the fort and built an emergency diesel power plant there. In 1992, the fort was transferred to the municipality of Den Helder, after which the Stelling Den Helder Foundation managed and renovated it. Today, a City Brewery is located in the fort, brewing Helderse beers.
